Swim Success at FIRST Open Meet – Bathgate Xcite

The first competitive event of 2016 for BASC swimmers was held over the weekend of Sat 9th & Sun 10th Jan with a FIRST Open Meet at the Bathgate Xcite pool. A total of 13 BASC swimmers attended; 4 of whom swim for FIRST, and the other 9 having been invited from BASC Gold and Silver squads.

The damp, oppressively grey skies of Boness and Linlithgow gave way to bright, clear, crisp conditions on the other side of the Bathgate hills, setting the scene for what turned out to be a hugely enjoyable, friendly and successful couple of days for all.

All of the BASC swimmers set new PB’s over the two day event. The biggest PB improvements were set by Alicia Evans (15sec) and Dylan Christie (14sec) for their respective 200m Breaststroke swims.

Keir Edgar had an outstanding meet, achieving new PB’s and first places for all 4 events he competed in. He also set a new West District age group record for his 100m Backstroke swim, finishing in under a minute with a time of 00:59.90. A fantastic result.

Overall BASC swimmers won a clutch of medals across a variety of events;
Douglas Calder – Bronze (100 Breaststroke)
Kirstyn Calder – Gold (100 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle & 400 Freestyle); Silver (200 Backstroke); Bronze (50 Freestyle)
Keir Edgar – Gold (200 Freestyle, 400 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 200 IM)
Alicia Evans – Silver (200 Breaststroke)
Liam Murphy – Gold (50 Breaststroke, 100 Breaststroke); Bronze (200 Breaststroke, 50 Butterfly)
Niamh Tierney – Gold (200 Backstroke)

Thanks to the coaches Sandy Stephen (both days) and Elaine Coffey (Saturday). Thanks also to Jemma Brown (FIRST Youth Performance Swimmer) who was unable to compete but helped out with the marshalling.

The event was also very well supported by BASC parents and volunteers. A big thank you to everyone who helped out including;
Mike Calder, Michael Nicolson and Myles Gorton all helped cover the role of Meet Manager (a special thanks to Michael and Myles who volunteered despite not having swimmers at the meet)
