Bo’ness ASC NewsletterMarch 2020

Well it has been one very interesting, challenging and bizarre month. I am not sure many of us could have been aware of what was coming and the huge impact that it would have. There was only one meet for us this month as everything else has been cancelled or postponed, including Open Swimming Competitions too. A statement from Scottish Swimming issued at the end of March has indicated that all swim competitions for all disciplines will be cancelled through till the end of August. We understand your disappointment and we feel for you.

Congratulations to Suzy Miller who was swimmer of the month.

Membership Update

Many thanks to all those who have paid their annual renewal fees promptly.  All swimmers and volunteers have now had their membership renewed with SASA (Scottish Amateur Swimming Association).

We would just like to remind everyone to read the policies on the website and sign a copy of these.  We will be doing this annually to ensure that everyone is up to date and aware of the policies.  Link to policies.

Message from Head Coach

Hello, I hope everyone is staying safe and staying active at home. I hope you are all enjoying working through the workout program that was linked through WhatsApp. I know it can get a little repetitive and a great place to look for fun and new exercises is the West DIstrict Swimming land training section.

Here is another useful training programme for all the swimmers: Bodyweight Home Programme

Whilst it is all really useful the Dingwall ASC Virtual Training has loads of fun activities that get you active and get you fit.

The Warrander Baths has a program that updates week to week with videos to guide you through all the exercises.

This month I have set myself a goal of learning to do a handstand if you want to you join me working through this playlist and see if we can learn a quite difficult skill. I think I will stop short of doing a handstand push up.

If you are really missing swimming you can try doing a dryland set it only takes 15 mins and all you need is a mirror and a clock or timer. First of re-watch Andrews Frontcrawl Mirror Swimming.

Then all you do is "swim" Front crawl in front of the mirror for 1 min and take 30 sec rest and repeat this 10 times. Focus on a good body rotation and a high elbow catch. This can also be done with his Backcrawl video.

Club Monthly Fees

We have received several very kind enquiries around the impact on the Club should parents cancel their monthly fees standing orders.

We wanted to let you know that the Club have taken actions to reduce as many of our outgoings as possible, however, as a responsible part of the community we do have still have costs and commitments which we feel we should honour.

We would emphasise that the Club would never ask or expect parents to pay fees whilst their swimmer is unable to participate in Club activities as a result of the current Covid-19 disruption, however, if you did feel that you were able to continue to support the Club financially, then this generosity would be greatly appreciated and help to keep the Club on a sound financial footing.

Finally, we would continue to encourage your swimmers to try out the land training links sent out by Graeme on WhatsApp, you might even want to join in!  Stay safe and well and we hope to see you all back in the Pool soon.

BASC Committee

Young Leaders Update

Here is an update from Jonathan Tiran and William Lawless who attended the Scottish Swimming Young Leaders Programme representing the Club.

We recently spent a weekend at the Inverclyde Sports Centre, with a number of others from Swimming Clubs across Scotland to participate and complete a course in leadership.  This is part of Scottish Swimming’s drive to involve young swimmers in their Club and encourage retention within swimming.  The aim was to help us support the Committee understanding what the swimmers in the club want.  The course covered communication, goal setting, and planning amongst other things.  We participated in different tasks to help us gain a better understanding of the topics.  These skills helped us to plan and create a project that we will present to the Committee.  The course presented us with the opportunity to learn new skills, we worked hard but also had a lot of fun too.  We enjoyed some free time in the gymnastics hall with a gymnastics coach, we had the option of a morning run as well.  We made new friends with the swimmers from the other clubs.  We both really enjoyed the weekend and are grateful for the experiences and skills we learned, and are looking forward to putting these into practice.

Swim Shop update

We are delighted to announce that we have partnered up with Wrightsport a local Glasgow based specialist swim store, a family owned personalising swimming company to bring direct to you our new club merchandise for 2020.

Individual orders can be placed directly with Wrightsport and delivered direct to your home. Of course we are here to help with sizing and advice (swimshop@bonessasc.org).  While we make the transition to the new club competition top we understand there will be a period of time with new and old tops. Please be assured there is no need to buy a new top unless your child’s current top is worn, torn or outgrown ? in fact the new tops look great with the old ones!  We made the decision to move to a new supplier following increased supplier costs and lengthy supply delays.  We wanted to keep cost down and bring to you, the customer a better quality top, using more modern materials whilst continuing to keep our club colours and logo with modern styling.  We hope you like the new tracksuit which we think complements the club top very well.  It can be fully personalised to suit the individual.

Poolside we’ll still try to bring you best prices on stock equipment.  Feel free to browse the full Wrightsport store for offers on training and competition swimwear.  There is also a full range of open water equipment.

Thanks for your continued support!
