Hello everyone.

Here is our first Newsletter for 2022.

It was a busy end to 2021 with our Club Championship, National League Time Trials, and a Forth Valley Junior League event.

Coaching Update

We are saying goodbye to one of our superb coaches, Susan Grant

Susan has been a key part of the Bo’ness Swim Club for many years from coaching, organising FVJL, being our Masters Representative, being a part of the committee and just generally being a great team member for the club.  I know that all of us will miss Susan, her input and enthusiasm but she has earned some well-deserved time off after coaching for over 12 years.  Susan will help until we have some more coaching cover.

We are pleased to say that we have had the offer from a previous Bo’ness Swimmer and FIRST Coach to join our Coaching team, Rob Lee.  We also have two, keen swimmers and parents, Lindsay McGrow & John Bremner who are going to lend their support.

If there are any parents that would like to add to the coaching support then please let either Graeme Davidson or Rachel McCavish know.  You don’t have to be a swimmer to help.

Note From Susan

After more than 12 years coaching with BASC I have decided to hang up my swim cap and 'retire'.

I'd like to say a huge thank you to the club for supporting me in my coaching qualifications and my lifeguard certificate a few years back.

I'd also like to say thank you to all the parents who have supported me and the club at swim meets and other club events; without your help we couldn't go to these galas.

Finally, a huge thank you to all my swimmers, hundreds over the years, who have been a joy to watch progress in their swimming.  It has been a great pleasure to be part of their young lives and to have made a difference in their sport.

So thank you, and I wish the club and all the swimmers every success for the future.

Best wishes

Susan

Land Training

Land training has started up again. This is for Bronze, Silver and Gold squads on a Saturday morning, 8am – 8.45am.

It is important for swimmers bones and muscles to not only train in the pool but also do land training to ensure that there is some weight bearing exercises done.

For more information on land training get in touch with Graeme Davidson

SASA Membership

Scottish Swimming annual renewal is due for all swimmers by the end of March.  The window for renewals opens on the 1st of March.  Our Membership Secretary, Rachel Bremner, will send out an email on how to renew your Scottish Swimmer Membership towards the end of February.  Emails to the Membership Secretary are answered on Monday and Thursday evenings.

SASA fees have stayed the same since last year

Swimmer – £45            Non-Swimmer - £10

Club Championship 2021

The Club Champs were held on 5th December and were fantastically supported by swimmers and volunteers.  It was great to be back after having to miss the event in 2020.  There were some amazing swims from everyone, which was excellent, considering this was the first time for some of our swimmers to take part in any kind of competition.

Trophies

After our successful Club Champs in December, we wanted to share the trophy winners with you and a date for when we plan to hand out the trophies.  ?

Firstly, congratulations to all of you that took part and supported the event.  The swimmers all did brilliantly and made their coaches very proud.  The parents, coaches and helpers were fantastic as the event wouldn’t have happened without you.

We plan to hand the trophies out on Thursday 24th February at 7.15pm.  It would be great if all the trophy winners could be there that night.

Our Trophies & Medals Secretary has been busy sorting out all the trophies and getting them ready for the winners.

One of our trophies the Seamus Laffan Shield is to be retired. Fiona Aitken has been fantastic in finding a new sponsor and the trophy has been replaced by a new Trophy for the Junior Boys 100 IM which has been kindly sponsored by J B Aitken Trustees.

Save the date

We have already booked the date for the 2022 Club Champs – Sunday 4th December 2022.

Club Celebration Evening

The committee have been working to organise a Club Celebration Evening for everyone, as it has been a long time since we have been able to get together.  We are hoping that as many of you as possible can come along.  There will be a ceilidh, a bar, tombola, spin the wheel, closest coin to the bottle and other games.  There will also be some presentations.

Friday 25th March 6.30pm – 10.30pm

Fisons Club (Bo’ness Chemical Workers)

All members and family are invited

Tickets will be £4 per person or £14 for a family ticket (2 adults + 3 Kids)

Previously, when we have run events, it has been a pot-luck supper type arrangement but due to the “Covid” times that we are living in we felt that this would not be a good idea.  So instead feel free to bring your own snacks. There will be the bar for soft and alcoholic drinks.

Tickets will go on sale soon.  We are really looking forward to seeing you all again in person and reconnecting.

Note: We are looking for donations for the tombola -if you have anything you would like to donate then please bring it to the club on a Thursday night and the coaches or Rachel Bremner will collect them.

New Members & Squad Moves

Congratulations to the following swimmers on their squad moves

Robin Campbell, Nathan Harkins, Mya Robertson, Mark Stirling, Olivia Stump and Finlay Armour.

Good luck to our swimmers that have recently moved to FIRST: Anna Beetham, Amy Black and Aidan McCavish.

Please welcome our new swimmers

Aimee Gilchrist, Connor Rossborough, Grace King, Mark Rossborough, Mathew King, Nadia Komorowski and Thomas King.

It is great to have you as part of the club.  Enjoy training.

New Members

Please spread the word that we are always welcoming new members for all our squads.
We offer a 4-week trial for swimmers so they can get a feel for the club and the sessions, before committing.

FVJL, Comps & Time Trials

Our first venture back to Forth Valley Junior League (FVJL) took place on Nov 23rd. For those of you that are not familiar with FVJL, this is a friendly and fun competition between 12 of the Forth Valley clubs. It is designed to give swimmers an introduction to swimming competitions and bring a sense of team spirit for each club. Each swimmer takes part in a couple of relay events with their teammates and also swims an individual race or two. The club get points based on the race results.

This time at FVJL our results were 79points and 7th overall. The team was made up of Mark Stirling, Finlay Armour, Lyla Gilmour, Grace Stuart, Ashleigh Stewart, Sebastian Kuklinek, Nathan Harkins, Adam Pashley, Parker Fascia, Brodick Crook, Abigail Armour, Amelia Ferrario, Sophia Ferrario and Keira Stirling. They all put out excellent swims and put up a very impressive score for an undermanned team. Well done!  Thank you to the parents and carers who supported this event for us.

For our younger swimmers as you know we are looking forward to the return of the Forth Valley Junior League. The plan is that the new FVJL will be 20th March, held at Grangemouth Swimming Complex.

Time trial news. We are looking at running a time trial for our top squads in conjunction with Grangemouth and Falkirk. This will be at Grangemouth complex and the pencilled in date is the 6th of March. This will be most of our swimmers a chance within a competitive atmosphere in nearly 2 years and will be a chance at a more relaxed return to competition.

Committee Update & Call for More Support

We have two new members to join our committee which is fantastic news. We have Fiona Aitken who is our new Trophies & Medals Secretary and we have Caroline McKie who is our new Welfare & Protection Officer. Thank you both for joining and supporting the club.

Our next committee meeting is Thursday 24th February at 7.30pm at Bo’ness Rec. If you would like to come along and see what we discuss and if there is a role that you might be able to take on or share with someone you would be welcomed with open arms. We need more members. We are all volunteers and the more of us there are the more we can achieve.

Roles that are available are:

  • Fundraising Co-ordinator (1/2 people)
  • Forth Valley Junior League (FVJL) Convenor
  • Gala Convenor
  • Vice President
  • Team Managers – poolside role at competitions
  • Young Leaders

The committee are very supportive and everyone helps and supports each other so please don’t think that it is scary to do a role. You can speak to Rachel McCavish who can discuss what this would involve.

Please help if you can as we need your help to keep the club operating.

Swim Shop

Thank you to everyone who supported our January swimshop shop sale we raised £147 for club funds. Please visit our club store with Wrightsport to purchase a club hoody or club top. Don’t forget to email swimshop your order number to be entered into a draw to win a surprise from swimshop.
